The Three Ways We Light a Tree
Trunk and Branch Wrapping
This is the labor-intensive one. We wrap the trunk from the base upward, then follow the primary branches out toward the tips. Done right, the tree reads as glowing architecture. Done wrong, it looks like someone threw a net at it.
Spacing is everything. Wraps that are too loose look sparse and cheap. Wraps that are too tight waste product and, on a young tree, can girdle the bark over a season. We wrap to a consistent interval, and we do not wrap so tightly that the tree pays for it in the spring.

Canopy Lighting
Instead of following the branches, we drape the canopy. This works on evergreens and on trees with dense growth where wrapping every branch is neither practical nor visible. It is faster than wrapping and reads well at a distance, which makes it a strong choice for large properties in Gloucester County and Atlantic County where the display is seen from the road.
Uplighting and Ground Wash
Ground-mounted fixtures throwing light up into the canopy. No strands in the tree at all. This is the subtle option, and it is the right call for specimen trees you do not want to touch, or for a corporate campus that wants presence without festivity. It also works year-round, which some clients like.
What Tree Lighting Installation Costs
Trees are priced by size and access, not by the foot. A young ornamental you can reach from the ground is a modest number. A 40-foot oak requiring a lift and a full day of wrapping is a serious line item, and it should be, because that is what it takes.
Realistically, most homeowners light one to three trees as part of a larger package. Most commercial and HOA clients light the entrance cluster. Very few people wrap every tree on the property, and we usually talk them out of it, because a display where everything is lit has no focal point.

The Mistakes That Kill a Tree Display
Mixing bulb colors and temperatures. Warm white and cool white on the same tree look like a mistake, because they are one.
Retail strands. Consumer product is not rated for eight weeks of outdoor exposure. In Atlantic County, where trees take coastal wind, retail strands fail early and they fail in the middle, which means the whole strand goes dark.
No power plan. A wrapped mature tree draws real current. We calculate the load and run dedicated circuits. Plugging four wrapped trees into one exterior outlet is how you trip a breaker every night at 5pm.
Wrapping too high to service. If a bulb fails at 35 feet, someone has to get up there. We plan for that before we start, not after.
Trees, Growth, and Why Wrap Comes Down Every Year
This is the question we get most often. Why not leave it up?
Trees grow. A wrap that fits perfectly in December is constricting by August. Left on a young or fast-growing tree, strand wire can cut into bark and cause lasting damage. Left on any tree, UV and weather degrade the wire until it becomes a liability.
